This week's challenge from lelly is to show a lucky charm. perhaps it is a piece of jewelry? or a talisman you carry in your pocket? do you have something on your desk or in your home that brings you good fortune? is it a baseball hat or a smelly old t-shirt? did someone give it to you? why is it meaningful to you? will you tell us about a time when it brought you good luck?
Perhaps I'm the minority, but I don't have one, at least not anything I consider to be a lucky charm. I do, however, have my Worry Dolls. I am a worrier. Much less so now than as a child, but I have always found something to worry about, sometimes to the point of making myself sick or losing sleep. As a little girl, my stomach was often in knots worrying about something I'm sure I had virtually no control over. I'm not sure at what point my mother gave me these, but these tiny little dolls took over a lot of my worries. I vaguely remember them being a gift after my parents returned from vacation, but I could be wrong.
The idea was to lay each of the six dolls out at night before I went to bed and assign each of them a worry. During the night, they would take care of whatever I was concerned with so I didn't have to stay awake at night worrying. While I probably knew then as I do now that these little dolls couldn't actually fix anything, it helped to turn my worries over to someone else for a while and relax. In a figuative sense, I suppose I do the same thing now when I'm overwhelmed. I often turn my worries over to my Father in Heaven for a while and face them again when I'm ready to deal with them. So while my Worry Dolls aren't lucky, they provided comfort and distraction from my childhood worries and were a good reminder this week that I don't have to deal with anything by myself.

i had totally forgotten about worry dolls! how 'lucky' that as a young girl you were able to find a way to lay aside your worries, even just for a few hours.
I would say worry dolls are a great piece of luck. I need some of those--well I think I would have to call my dolls stress ones.
I used to always wear a worry doll headband. And I had a worry doll shirt. And I had a little pouch of them...just in case the worries weren't covered with the others. I love it! Thanks for making me remember!
My 13 year old daughter gave worry dolls to her friends for Christmas. They were so cute, it made me want some even though I'm not a worrier.
I am new to blogging and am grateful to have found your site through Lelly's SPT challenge. I was intrigued by the dolls and looked them up briefly - it looks like they are from Guatamala! What a great gift from your parents!
I also noticed you are amidst the process of adoptioN! I am so happy for you. We have twin girls who we adopted from Russia in 2003 and have just started the process again. The classes they have you attend are at first annoying - but once you get involved - you're right - they really allow you to see the whole adoption perspective. Look forward to your adoption updates!
I am also a worrier and have been one my whole life. I think I have actually gotten worse since my childhood. Maybe I should get myself some worry dolls.
And yet again I'm reminded that we definitely do come from the same gene pool. Glad Aunt Tam found a special way to help you through your worries that is still with you today.
Everyone should have some worry dolls!
My daughter is in love with these little dolls...she's been making them out of Q-tips...
Great post idea...
wow i really like this...i could have really used these dolls as a child as I am a huge worrier. You are right, it's so good to know that we are not alone in this world and there is someone to take away our fears.
What great parents to help with those worry stomach aches in such a creative fashion. My stomachaches were left a mystery of my youth.
I remember these! What a neat little treasure & memories ;)ciao
I used to have a worry doll barrette. In fact, I think I still have it -- I'll have to go dig it out. I think they are so cute!
What a fun post. I too am a worrier and may need to find some simiarly situated little dolls. Currently I just twist my hair and furrow my brow. The brow furrowing is not cute, is tending to cause serious wrinkles and my yoga teacher is always telling me to relax my face.
Anyway, thanks for a fun post!
