You know live in South Phoenix when...

1. You pull over for the stream of policemen to pass you, only to follow them into your own neighborhood and have to detour to your street so the cops can try to catch whatever lovely human is attempting to evade them.

2. You wake up at 2:30 a.m. because the police helicoptor circling has circled one too many times and you're just curious if whatever lovely they are searching for is hanging out in your back yard.

3. The entire southeast block of your neighborhood is barricaded with police tape all morning for who knows what reason and while all of the emergency vehicles happen to be facinating to your three-year-old, the place we call "home" is just two streets away. hmmm.

4. Your more "upstanding" neighbors are hesitant to place holiday decorations outside of their home in fear of vandalism or theft.

5. Your children have learned to greet the majority of your neighbors in a language other than his own (this one isn't so bad).

Ah, this is where we currently call home- silly that when I lived south of Harlem I felt safer. Naivety has it's upsides people!

I totally know what you mean. Las Vegas is much more intimidating to me then Harlem ever was. I miss the safe streets of New York. :)

Ahh! I love it. And to honest...I do in fact have times where I miss living there...not necessarily the helicopters, but the people!

Have you had an exciting week that I am not aware of or are these just casual observations over time? I guess, I am the naive one, I feel perfectly safe here, hmmmm. Maybe I need to bring the dogs in at night.

Are you serious? I had no idea. Terribly sorry as I totally feel your pain. (we were pretty much on a first name basis with the SWAT team in our old neighborhood)

these are the few things that i do not miss in the old neighborhood! the other night we accidentally left our garage door wide open all night in our new house (oops) and much to our utter surprise and amazement nothing was touched, stolen, or otherwise vandalized! sure, i probably won't do it again but what a different neighborhood.

that being said, i miss all of the people, the ward, the stake, and the occasional COPS show occurring outside my front door. :)

just think a lovely tree lined streets with pickets fences would have no stories to tell

Okay, I totally agree with you. I felt about a thousand times safer in NY and in Metuchen, NJ than I do in Houston.

Our area of Houston, has a little bit of a crime problem, as well. Luckily we have neighborhood crime watch and a burglar alarm. Nevertheless, monthly we get a crazy story.

Don't you just love it, I understand 100%. I really hope to live somewhere someday where I feel a little bit safer.

I have to agree with Sandi, girls. We have lived here in Laveen for 5 years and never had any problems. I've accidentally left my garage door open twice and never had anything stolen (what a blessing!). I do agree about the police helicopters...although I noticed those when I lived in Gilbert as well. Sorry, but I love bein' "southside" :)
